Say hello to a 21 year-old, Yasmine aka Myss Moxie. I found this picture a few weeks ago and knew I wanted to use it for a post and it wasn’t til a bout of insomnia 7 days ago did I realize what I wanted to use it for. Like my Moxie's First Bag entry I posted 13 months ago, there are things I want to tell this 21yo, PYT that I at the age of 32 (12/31) know now that I wish I knew then…
First, the man taking this picture loved you with all of his heart. You don’t know it now but a love that sustaining, reciprocating and pure would take years to come back around.
Within a year from this day, you will be living in New York City, making connections that will change your life and launch your career.
Within 2 years, you will have suffered heartache beyond your wildest imagination, land your dream job, and befriend one of the biggest stars in the world and consequently help launch his career. People will take your kindness for weakness. They will take advantage of you but you will still believe in their goodness, no matter how hard they try to show you their truth.
I look into this girl’s eyes and she has NO idea how twisted some of her encounters will be. And no she is not perfect, neither is the woman she would grow up to be but if its one thing she always remembers, it is to live her life with integrity, hence the title of this entry – To Thine Own Self Be True.
Young Yaz aka the chick pictured in this post, you will make some poor choices, have the urge to feel regret for some of them but then you will know that its all in the name of growth. Don’t be hard on yourself…it is not a reflection of your heavenly birthright, and God given greatness.
Girl, above all else, remember these words…its ok to say NO. I’ve said this before in previous posts that I have always put others happiness before mine. 2009 ushered in a new change of thought for me. I learned that it is absolutely OK, if not IMPERATIVE to say no. There are people in this world that don’t have your best interest at heart. People in this world that contort, disguise and manipulate their truth beyond recognition, in the name of self-aggrandizement. And there are also people that want the best for you and in the name of true friendship will support your choices (Thank You, Elon – I will NEVER forget what you did for me).
Keep the latter closest to you. Because as you reach your highest potential, it will seem as if the wrong people have multiplied and their disguises and crafty words will grow stronger. Your gut will never steer you wrong, no matter how you ignore it. Forgive yourself for ill decisions but don't let them define you. The people that love you will see your truth regardless and seek to better you. And it is only fair, right and just to yourself to do the same for them. Trust in the right people.
And just in case you folks were wondering where this quote came from, it is from William Shakespeare's "Hamlet". The entire quote reads as follows...
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell, my blessing season this in thee!
