Moxie's First Bag
Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 5:55PM
I'm not sure how old lil myss moxie is in this picture...

but full grown Moxie is about a month and a half away from her "jubilee" bday. 12/31...you do the math. But as I look at this picture of me rocking my fresh purple suit and patent leather shoes, I can't help but notice 2 things, 1. I was a darned cute kid and 2. look at the size of that bag around my neck! Its literally weighing me down. And most of you who know Moxie, know that I've done an episode dedicated to Erykah Badu's "bag lady". And I recently stumbled across that picture of me and it screams "irony". I'm sure that's probably my mom or auntie's bag around my tiny neck. Guess I inherited my first "bag" way back then. Its a simple bag, but its huge. Bigger than me, even. I look at it today and wonder if whoever owns that bag passed whatever blessings, wisdom and "issues" associated with its owner, to me. Years later, I've attained all sorts of bags. "Cheap but cute" bags, book bags aka back packs, messenger bags, designer bags, big bags, small bags and have even come across a ziploc bag a time or 2. But NEVER a knock off! A girl's gotta have standards! All of which suited me at some point in my life. But today, I'm looking at this picture, exactly 40 days from my 31st birthday and I want to do 2 things, 1. travel back in time and have a chat with mini moxie about that bag and 2. tell her that of all the bags in her life, this one will prepare you for all the others to come. No bag will ever be as big or take the place of that bag. I look at her eyes and its full of life and innocence. There's even a hint of a smile. Whoever gave her that bag means her no harm but is preparing her for the weight that she will one day bear. Erykah's "Bag Lady" is one of my favorite songs. Every line in that song and the video resonates so much with me. And now when I hear it, I will think of this picture and mini moxie.
*Every now and then, I will post entries and attach childhood pictures of myself. I believe they will help illustrate my points a wee bit better
